Description

Microcrystalline wax, any petroleum-derived plastic material that differs from paraffin waxes in having much finer and less-distinct crystals and higher melting point and viscosity. Microcrystalline waxes are used chiefly in laminated-paper products, in coatings and linings, and in adhesives, sealingcompositions, and various types of polishes.

In contrast to paraffins, microcrystalline waxes may vary widely in character depending on the crude-oil source and the method and degree of refinement. Some are ductile, like beeswax; others are hard and brittle; and still others crumble easily during handling. The melting-point range is higher than that of paraffin wax, with commercial grades ranging from 63° to 93° C (145° to 200° F). The colour of microcrystalline waxes ranges from creamy white to dark brown. Decolorization is difficult, and these waxes’ odour and taste may be undesirable in some applications.

In cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations, microcrystalline waxes are used as inactive substances, which alongside other constituents, such as petroleum jellies, augment the lipid phase of an emulsion or the ointment base itself. They are used to improve oil Binding properties and stability, to adapt the hardness of a preparation and whenever a hard but smooth and ductile grease component with low crystalline Characteristics is required. They add structure and hardness to lip balm sticks and other products in stick form used as beauty products, without being Excessively crystalline.

End Use

Rubber Industry : as an additive to provide softness, lustre and weathering protective for household & industrial rubber goods.

Tyre Industry : as an ingredient of rubber compounding in tyre industry to provide protection against action of light, oxygen & ozone.

Petroleum Jelly : The unique property of MCW to bind oil with other liquids is used for manufacture of jellies required for industrial, pharmaceutical and jelly filled telecommunication cable applications. Industrial jellies are used for coating on machines, tools etc to act as a barrier against corrosion. Jellies of pharmaceutical grade are used in production of ointments and cosmetic creams.

PVC Extrusion : as external lubricants in extrusion of PVC resins.

Hot-melt Adhesives : are used in packaging, tapes, disposables, footwear.

Other uses : Wax solutions are used in the calibration of lab glassware, polishes. It is also used in cosmetics and textile finishing.
